The Malaysian-Indonesian Spat

When the spat (brief argument) between Indonesia & Malaysia begins a couple of weeks ago, I thought I just want to keep quiet. Taking the stance to just wait & see what happens next... till today. Tetiba jer saya rasa mcm terpanggil utk memberi sedikit respon / komen mengenai nya.

First & foremost, I rasa menda nih tak seharusnya berlaku pun. Kita dah hidup berjiran ni lama dah - sejak berkurun-kurun lamanya. Banyak perkara yang common antara kita. Serumpun lah katakan. The sad thing is that it happened during the Holy Month of Ramadhan ... Let me ask this question : Mana dah pergi our spirit of Ramadhan ?

Kita nih (tak kira lah Malaysian or Indonesian) rata2 mmg ramai dari keturunan darah panas. Jenis gedebe.

Sifat sebegini is nothing to be proud of. So there's no end to it.

Sebaik2 nya kita kena sama2 banyak bersabar, be more understanding of each other. What more negara kita nih terkenal dengan mempunyai jumlah penganut Islam yang teramai ...

Elakkanlah kerja cabar-mencabar nih. To me, such provocation is just a reflection of how shallow our mind is. It shows lack of knowledge & understanding on the shared similarities of culture & values that both our countries have.

And when they move around, they bring along their culture & values ...

I read in a local newspaper recently that there are about 1.8 million Indonesians in Malaysia today. Besar jumlah tuh ! Naudzubillah ! Siapa yang rugi ? For God's sake, we are all brothers & sisters !

Sama2 lah kita fikirkan, siapa yang sedang bersorak gembira apabila perselisihan sebegini berlaku antara kita sesama Muslim ? Syaitan ? Orang2 kafir ? Get what I mean ? Ejen-ejen anti-Islam sangat lah seronok bila umat Islam bergaduh sesama sendiri. Tanya lah diri : Is it worth it - all this fight just over a Pendet dance ?

Sometimes it occured at the back of my mind - pernah tak mereka yang claim Pendet dance ni diorang punya dah mohon sijil IP (Intellectual Property) ? There will be no winner.

So to all my Muslim brothers & sisters, sama2 lah kita beristighfar. Let's all keep calm & let our government leaders do their thing to ease the tensions. Don't take any action that might tarnish our good relations. Perbanyakkanlah program2 yang dapat memantapkan lagi cooperation and undertanding between Malaysian & Indonesian people.

Why not ? ;)

Apa itu POLITIK ?

This I received thru e-mail from a colleague. Done a bit of minor editing here and there supaya jadi lebih spicy. Baca lah sampai abis ... huhu ;)

Akhir sekali si anak terpaksalah menyalin pampers adiknya sendiri.

Itulah politik".

Kuang kuang kuang !!!

Feeling the pinch of the rising fuel prices

Last June 5th, the Government finally announces the new prices of petrol as RM2.70 per liter (up 41% from RM1.92), and diesel as RM2.58 per liter (up 63% from RM1.58). Besides that, there’ll also be a follow up (or rather after effect) increase in electricity tariffs, foodstuffs etc, etc and etc. The list never ends. Some even anticipates that an inflation rate increase is just around the corner ...

To cushion the impact, the restructuring package also includes the following scheme :
- 30 sen subsidy for petrol and diesel
- Automatic monthly adjustment in line with global prices
- Annual cash rebate of RM625 for owners of private vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 2,000cc, and pick-up trucks and jeeps up to 2,500cc
- Annual cash rebate of RM150 for owners of motorcycles with a 250cc engine or less
- Road tax discount of RM200 for owners of private vehicles with engine capacities above 2,000cc
- RM50 road tax discount for motorcycles with engines above 250cc
- Fishermen, boat owners and transport operators will get diesel at RM1.43 per liter
- Each Malaysian fishing vessel owner will receive RM200 monthly
- Fishing vessel owners will get incentive of 10 sen for every kg of catch landed

NOTE: Cash rebates will be given to the owners of the cars and motorcycles when they renew their road tax (from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009). Claims can be made at all 686 post offices nationwide from June 14, 2008 (initially July 1st)

The majority of the rakyat seems to receive the news with mixed reactions. Some seems to be happy and others angry. Happy because the “secret” is no longer a secret, and angry because many feel that the price increase is far too much for them to swallow.

The rise in prices puts great pressure, uneasiness and worry on the livelihood of the rakyat in general. Some have already resorted to a change in their lifestyle to help reduce the impact of the price hikes on them. But as history has shown, people will eventually get used to the higher prices and revert to their old ways of lifestyle. If you are feeling the pain and would like to lessen it, read on.

So how do I feel the pinch from the impact of the fuel price surge ? Well, first I’m a very simple and practical man. I don’t get angry for nothing. Most of us know that the price hike was inevitable with the rising global prices. Well, at least that's what our political leaders want us to believe.
It's not that I totally agree or disagree with them but to be fair, we need to listen to all sides, look at all angles. Of course, some quarters blamed it on the predictions or "speculations made by manipulators" from certain "world leaders" ... I reckon you know who they are ?

According to a report by The Star (8 June 2008), in January 2007 the price of crude oil in the world market was only around US$50 (RM164.50) a barrel. Now, 18 months later, it had risen to almost US$130 (RM427.70) a barrel.
And analysts were predicting it would continue to rise up to US$200 (RM658) per barrel !! Wow, if that is really gonna happen, then by that time our petrol price could go up even to RM4.00 per liter, some people say this gonna happen may be in August ? Na'udzubillah ...
The following are fuel prices from the past 18 years - since 1990) :
Mahathir's era
before 1990 - RM 0.89
1990 - RM 1.10 (incr of RM 0.21)
01/10/2000 - RM 1.20 (incr RM 0.10)
20/10/2001 - RM 1.30 (incr RM 0.10)
01/05/2002 - RM 1.32 (incr RM 0.02)
31/10/2002 - RM 1.33 (incr RM 0.01)
01/03/2003 - RM 1.35 (incr RM 0.02)
Pak Lah's era
01/05/2004 - RM 1.37 (incr RM 0.02)
01/10/2004 - RM 1.42 (incr RM 0.05)
05/05/2005 - RM 1.52 (incr RM 0.10)
31/07/2005 - RM 1.62 (incr RM 0.10)
28/02/2006 - RM 1.92 (incr RM 0.30)
05/06/2008 - RM 2.70 (incr RM 0.78)
Note : (Common Justification Scripts - previously)
1. Kenaikan minyak masih rendah berbanding mana2 pun negara ASEAN.
2. Kerajaan akan pastikan kenaikan tidak membebankan
3. Kerajaan tidak mampu lagi menampung subsidi.
(Scripts/ Justifications - now)
1. Rakyat mestilah mengamalkan hidup jimat cermat.
3. Bila kita susah, kenalah sama-sama susah, bila masa senang, 'kita saling membantu'.
4. Penjimatan subsidi RM13.7 billion 'dipulangkan balik pada rakyat'.
5. Langkah ini adalah 'situasi menang-menang'.

Sounds familiar isn't it ? Whatever it is, whether we like it or not, the price hike is really happening right in front of our eyes and it’s affecting all of us. There’s no use to get upset or angry. Those who want to go for demonstration etc, go ahead. We need groups like that too. But do it in a "proper, peaceful & reasonable" manner. But for me, the most reasonable and immediate way to face this mess NOW is to find ways of how to get more out of every liter of petrol I pump into my Terrano's tank.

Then for a longer term plan and actions, I guess there are 3 things I can do. First, to increase income. May be have to work part-time, offer tuition classes etc. But will I have the time, and energy ? Secondly, reduce expenditure. Spend less or cut on “unnecessary” things in life. Do groceries at Tesco or Giant, buy generics and avoid expensive labels. These actually I've been doing since many years ago. Thirdly, take EXTRA good care of the things I have so that their lifetime is longer. Do a regular check ups and maintenance of the car and all home electrical appliances like the stove, refrigerator, washing machine, computers etc, including clothes and shoes.

On a personal note, I’ll have to review all my travel arrangements – like going to work, sending kids to school, the weekend family outings, etc. May be I now need to drive less and use the car only when necessary. But going to work is a necessity and there is nothing I can do about that.

And I don’t think I’ll give up driving because public transport is inefficient and unreliable. I want to see the ministers take public transport. See if they can get to their offices on time. The main problem with our current public transport is the poor accessibility and non-connectivity of the different services (KTM, LRT and RapidKL). In the end, it costs almost as much as you would have spent on petrol, but you waste more time on the road.

Or may be I’ll just apply for a change of place of work. Now I’m commuting 60km (to & fro) per day from home in Bandar Baru Bangi to work in Taman Shamelin Perkasa, Cheras. After all KPTM has a branch campus at Teras Jernang, Bangi, which is less than 10 minutes drive from my home at Section 3, BBB.
Hmmm … I wonder if my employer is gonna entertain my request. Heard that the transfer waiting list queue is already quite long ... ;)

OPPOSITION or PARTNERS

One point worth mentioning is the use (or rather misuse ?) of the word “Opposition” each time people refer to certain political parties. This put a person of differing ideals as an Opposition, which forces a confrontational kind of stance – ie you are either “for” or “against”.
In fact the BN is such a fanatic practitioner of this practice that it has yet to recover from the fact that they now sit on the “opposition” bench in five states … padan muka :(

Same goes with the term “opposition blogs”. Who and what are they actually ? Well to start with, there are only a handful of this so-called “opposition blogs”, notably the blogs written by Lim Kit Siang, Tony Pua, Jeff Ooi, Chegu Bard and a few others.

What about the others ? They aren’t actually Opposition blogs. They are just blogs of the people of Malaysia – comprising of concerned individuals giving their opinions on the issues that affect them ... just like this one you are reading now !
They have their own ideas of what’s important and what’s true (at least to them). Some are insightful, others are biased ; some question everything and everyone, others are balanced and objectives.

If anyone wants to engage with them, I would suggest to start by reading their blogs and the comments posted by their readers. This will give us a good idea of what the concerns of the rakyat are, what they think of those statements issued by government and issues that the government need to address.

In short, just because one disagrees with or criticizes the goverment does not necessarily make them “opposition”. Labeling them so, will just give the impression that we’re not really listening to their cries.

To me, labeling others who “disagree” with you as opposition is an unhealthy practice, as in this era of partnership and alliance, people don’t “fight” with their competitors anymore. But rather they should always be looking at means and ways of how to settle things with a win-win situation through partnership kind of cooperation.

Malaysians are not stupid or immature lot. In fact, they’ve never been stupid. They’ve always criticized - right from the olden days. But in those days, they "criticize" at coffee shops, barber shops and at mamak stalls. Today they do it on the internet - through blogs, forums, emails and the likes.

These new generation prefer progress to development, they want to enrich rather than just gather wealth, they want to improve their quality of life, not just adopt the latest lifestyle, they want to be heard, and not just be spoken to. I don't think there's anything wrong if someone begs to be different from the “mainstream” ?

My wish (wishful thinking ?) is that we should stop calling each other who are “on a different boat” as “opposition”, but instead should complement each other. All of us, especially those elected assemblymen and parliamentarians should be focusing on how to put the rakyat to live in harmony, prosperity and security – regardless of religion, race and political ideals. Malaysia Boleh !

COUNTRY, PARTY OR SELF ?

As a Malaysian, what more a Kelantanese Malaysian, I am truly fed up and “loya” with all the back-stabbing and bickering among UMNO members, especially when these news were on the front pages and main highlights of our local newspapers, televisions and other media.
Nowadays I even skip national news in most newspaper, as they all highlighted about fighting for power in the party. It likens the washing of dirty clothes in public. It’s sooo boring (and embarrasing too) ! Dont you think so ?

There are greater issues that need to be addressed. They should focus on running the country instead of wasting time “fighting” for power. Many of them just couldn’t wait for Pak Lah to step down. It just shows how power crazy this bunch of people are !

On a personal note, if the prime minister is to step down, then I feel that all the UMNO representatives before the 12th General Election should also follow suit because they should all share the blame and responsibility.
The failure is a team failure that has come about from sheer arrogance, self interest topped up with total ignorance of the people’s voices.

Sometimes I wonder why all this sudden obsession with the succession plan? PAS didn’t have any such problems governing Kelantan even though it won by only one seat in 2004 …

People want less politicking and instead more concern for the nation and people. It seems like these politicians have not learnt their lesson. May be they have forgotten that the people are watching them …

The rakyat voted for a government that delivers – be it BN or PR (Pakatan Rakyat). Keep it clean, keep it simple, and deliver what the rakyat wants – not what the party members want ! This is the government of Malaysia and for those leaders or people who believe that kerajaan is only BN, please stop at la la land and put your feet on the ground and work at it.

The ruling party doesn’t tell people what they should want. It is the people who should tell the ruling party what they want. So politicians serve the people, and not the other way around. They must therefore serve honestly and faithfully.

All in all, I would say that the most powerful voice of all belonged to ordinary Malaysians. They were united in what they wanted – a functioning government, minus the politics. To those politicians, I have one request : Get your priorities right and put nation first. Stop pointing fingers at each other and get on with the job !

The 12th General Election : Lessons Learned

The 12th General Election is over, and the electorate has spoken. The Pakatan Rakyat (a coalition of PKR-DAP-PAS, a.k.a. “Opposition”) has now took control of the state governments in Perak, Penang, Kedah and Selangor; with Kelantan getting stronger and stronger under PAS. Takbir !

Even though some are still in a state of denial, others say that the election outcome has been an eye-opener or a wake-up call for all. To me, I considered it a blessing in disguise as now there’ll be a better (and stronger ?) check and balance in the government administration.

Political analysts and activists blamed the dismal performance on Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders losing touch with the grassroots as well as “arrogance of power” in BN. The people are dissatisfied with perceived arrogance of power within BN, especially over certain UMNO leaders whom through their words or actions have resulted in resentment.

Now the people could see and compare what the Pakatan states and Barisan states could provide, especially in the five states the Pakatan Rakyat rules.

In short, the BN Government especially UMNO should undergo a drastic change in the way the country is run. They must allow the others to speak up. They must listen to what the rakyat say and if what they said is the truth, they (the Government) should admit or accept it with an open heart.

To add salt to injury, the newly appointed Tourism Minister recently announced in the local newspaper that BN would terminate all MoUs related to tourism in states governed by the Pakatan Rakyat. This sort of knee-jerk like reaction by BN has appalled many readers. Some felt that this is another example of the BN-led government distancing itself from the people, despite pledging to get closer to the grassroots.

It seemed as if they fail to see that the bulk of the Federal funding comes from taxes paid by the citizens - from all political parties ! As such, the Government is responsible for the well being of all states, regardless of whether it is held by the BN or Pakatan Rakyat, especially when it comes to budget allocation as this money belongs to taxpayers, not just those who support the BN.

The ruling government must be fair. The taxes received should be refunded to the people through development projects that would benefit them, regardless of their political inclination.

If the Government wants to regain people’s support, it’s important to avoid making such immature decisions and start focusing on the well being of everyone. It should not look as if it is punishing the Pakatan Rakyat states.
In fact they have a duty to put the rakyat who has voted for them to live in harmony, prosperity and security – regardless of their political inclination !

MENGAPA SAYA MESTI MENGUNDI

Allahu akbar !

Kepada saudara-saudariku semua, tanyalah diri masing-masing: AKU MENGUNDI KERANA APA? Tepuk dada tanya IMAN.
Wassalam.
